It is a three year, six semester program. The main objective of this program is to empower the youth with the richness of English literature and language along with courses like computer application and management studies. An option is also open to learn foreign languages like French, Mandarin and Spanish along with English.

With the emerging trend of globalization and professionalism, the need of the hour is focused on excellent command over English, proficiency in computer application and effective knowledge of management studies. A bachelor degree with English (H) has remarkable potential in professional life.

One can pursue post-graduation and PhD in English for lucrative teaching profession in schools, colleges and universities. This degree provides a strong base for appearing in civil service exams, journalism and MBA.

Knowledge of foreign language enables one to get good jobs in foreign embassies and as interpreters and translators in different areas of professional life.

The School of Humanities at GEHU Dehradun in addition to the traditional curriculum, understands and integrates various teaching methodologies such as interactions with eminent writers and academicians as well visits to literature fests which inculcates in a young graduate and post graduate essential understanding of English Literature and English Language. Their curriculum also emphasizes the basic computing skills which has become essenial for any person today.

Additionally, the School of Humanities encourages students to embrace learning even outside the classroom and adopts a continuous learning module with adequate international exposure via registrations to various Massively Online Open Courses (MOOCs)

  • An Exclusive Microfiction Workshop conducted by Terribly Tiny Tales with Mr. Chintan Ruparel co-founder of ttt


  • Annual departmental e-Newsletter. Department of English has made its maiden attempt to publish the first volume of its annual departmental e-Newsletter. This e-Newsletter provides an extensive view of the academics and cultural activities, achievements of the students, guest lectures and workshops organized by the department during the last calendar year.   • Guest Lecture by Mr. Nitin Chandola- Editor in chief of Doon Mosaic magazine. A guest lecture was organized by the Department of English on 23rd May, 2017. Mr. Nitin Chandola conducted this guest lecture. He is the Editor in chief of ‘THE DOON MOZAIC’ whose main ideology is to write about the history, literature, fine arts and the changes that take place in Dehradun. The Doon Mozaic is first journal of its own kind which is quality based and has unbiased level of publication strategies.

    The first print journal was released in January 2017. The main objective was to awaken the audience about the social injustices and hypocrisies prevailing in the region. The students got to know a lot about Rebel Journalism. It is form that provokes the journalists to take a fearless stand for their say.


  • Conference on Biodiversity and sustainable tourism in Uttarakhand. Two students of 4th semester of BA (hons) English, namely, Tanya Prashar and Muskan Bajaj  attended a conference in ICFRE on the occasion of INTERNATIONAL BIODIVERSITY DAY. The main theme decided by the UN for this year was “Biodiversity and Sustainable Development”. The chief guest was the Forest Minister of Uttrakhand- Mr. Harak Singh Rawat. The other dignitaries included Mr. Anoop Sahi who is amongst the top 10 best photographers of India. The discussion was mainly about how we can conserve our cultural heritage of Uttrakhand and the policies that the government can take up to prosper tourism in Uttrakhand.


  • The Department of English organized its Department's Day on May 6. The celebrations incorporated fun frolic events namely, Bollywood Drama, Spin a Yarn, Anonymity, Spell Bee and Turn the Table. 


  • The Department of English, together with School of Media and Mass Communication organized a Guest Lecture on "Story Writing Techniques- A critical Approach" by Ms Emily A B, an acclaimed Literature and Writing Teacher who has served for several years in East Helena Public Schools and Missoula Country Public Schools in the United States, on January 24, 2017

  • November 2016: A Placement Training Session and Guest Lecture with Dr. Rogers P. Joseph, Chairman, Placement and a senior faculty in the Strategic Management Area at IIM Rohtak



  • November 2016: A workshop on the Power of Mind- Enhancing Memory with Mr Prateek Yadav; recipient of 8 National Awards and #1 Memory Champion in India for 4 consecutive years.

Achievers of the School of Humanities
Students of BA English (Hons) participated and presented their papers in the National Conference “YUWA 2016” within the gamut of the theme of “Channelizing Potential of India Youth for Nation Building”. The students presented the papers in the conference. The titles of the papers of the students are as follows:

  • Riddhi Garg and Ravish Uppal- Youth and Education: A Step towards National Development
  • Tanya Parashar and Abhyam Jamwal- Indian Youth: The Hope for Better Tomorrow
  • Ayushi Nagalia- Youth’s Role in Nation Building
  • Shubhangi- Seeds in a Mettle
The students were certified and their papers published in the compendium of the conference.
